This week Kaitlyn put a smile on all of our faces as she zipped into a CORE parking space in her Mini Cooper for the FIRST TIME EVER. Kait was injured a little over a year ago and since then she has tackled life and her recovery with strength, faith and determination. Not only has she pursued her recovery in the CORE gym, but she is enrolled in college full-time living the dorm life and now has completed her driving eval.
I am especially proud of my fellow client and friend since I know how nervous she was to get back behind the wheel. To put her mind at ease, I even convinced her to try driving my big truck around the parking lot to get used to the hand controls. That almost ended badly (HaHa! Inside joke, folks!), but as usual she perservered and is on the road again!
For those who don’t understand why driving is such a BIG deal after an injury, let me just explain… A vehicle is so much more than just transportation from one place to another. It literally is FREEDOM. Freedom to go and come as you please. Freedom to turn the radio up as loud as you want and sing completely off key because no one is around to hear you. And, freedom to cruise down a back road with the sun shining on you and the wind blowing through your hair. Maybe this seems a little poetic to some, especially when I4 traffic is usually a beast… But, it’s not, because regaining the ability to do something as crucial as drive is like letting the whole world know that you will not let this injury confine you, let alone define you.
At CORE, we work so hard in the gym in the pursuit of function, health and independence to make sure that moments like these are possible… Congrats, Kaity! Don’t forget to buckle up!
